Project New Era Environmental & Development Society (NEEDS)

Campaign Story

About the project

Chandel district in Manipur is a backward district and it has become a very sensitive area since the last two decades. The conflict created deep negative impacts to the life of the people particularly life security, socio-economy, education, health and other developmental aspects. Thousands of children in the conflict affected areas could not get proper education as their villages were either burnt or uprooted. In some cases, school buildings were being occupied by army personnel during the conflict. Thus, the hope for better education for many children became a distant dream.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project NEEDS team has been working to enhance implementation of policies and laws pertaining to child labor, child marriage, child trafficking and child sexual abuse. The team is tirelessly focussing towards identification of vulnerable families and linkages with the scheme. Stakeholders are engaged in the process to provide counseling to parents and children and rehabilitation at the institution level. The key project activities are identification of vulnerable families and linkages with the scheme, support to the victim families to get justice and the compensation from the department.

The way forward

● Strengthening of VCPC in operational villages.
● Identification of vulnerable children and linking with the scheme related to the child rights
● Support to the victim families to get justice and the compensation from the department.
● Interface with the multi stakeholders at community level for prevention of child trafficking.

Story of Rescue

Thenminthang married Darnaishel in the year 2014 and had three children. According to reliable information, Darnaishel was forcefully kidnapped by Thenminthang and a gang while she was on the way to work; and although she tried asking for help, no one came to her rescue. The lady decided to marry him because she felt that it was her fate. The man was an alcoholic and often harassed her. They were an extremely poor couple and lived on daily wages.

One woeful day, her husband beat her almost to death, she ran for life to her mother’s house, leaving her three children with the husband. The husband would often come to her house drunk with a knife and sticks.

Darnaishel’s younger brother was caught by the husband one day and was threatened to take the three children to their mother. With great helplessness, the boy brought the three children and handed them to their mother.

After a few days, the husband and the husband’s father started coming and asking for the children again with ill motives. The mother of the children refused to send the children back as she knew they would be living in miserable conditions which lacked proper nutrition and shelter.

When the Project NEEDS team came to know about the situation, they made a swift move to rescue the children. The team made all necessary arrangements and took precautions to rescue the children along with the mother. They handed over the children to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Tengnoupal District. Later, the CWC made all necessary procedures and put the children in the Specialized Adoption Agency (SAA), Chandel District.
